Campaign Audience
Choose who receives a campaign using lists, tags, match rules, or segments.
What this does
Your audience decides exactly who receives the campaign email. You can target lists, tags, both lists and tags, or a saved segment.
Before you start
- Make sure your lists and tags are up to date.
- If you plan to use a segment, confirm it only uses lists and tags. Contacts can save richer segments, but campaign audiences currently accept list and tag rules only.
Steps
Open a campaign
Open Campaigns, then select a campaign.
Choose how to target recipients
In Audience, do one of the following:
- Use Lists and Tags to include or
exclude contacts.
- Use the AND/OR control inside each
picker when more than one list or tag is selected.
- Pick a saved Segment.
- Use Manage Lists or Manage Tags if
you need to update targeting options without leaving the campaign editor.
Confirm the audience count
Review Estimated recipients at the bottom of the Audience card.
Match rules for lists and tags
When you select more than one list or tag, use the AND/
OR control inside each picker to decide how strict the match should be:
- AND requires a contact to match every selected list or tag in that picker.
- OR matches contacts who have any selected list or tag in that picker.
- Lists and tags are evaluated separately. If you include both lists and tags, a contact can qualify by matching the selected-list rule or the selected-tag rule.
- Excluded lists and tags always remove matching contacts after the include rules are applied.
For example, if you include a client list and a webinar tag, the campaign can reach contacts who are in that list, contacts with that tag, or contacts with both. Use exclusions when a specific list or tag should always be left out.
Manage lists and tags in place
Open the audience picker
In Audience, open the list or tag picker you want to adjust.
Open the manager
Choose Manage Lists or Manage Tags to update your available options.
Apply the updated selection
Save the changes you need, then apply the selected lists or tags back into the campaign.
Audience rules
- If you select a segment, the campaign uses that segment and ignores manual list/tag picks.
- Segments currently support lists and tags only for campaigns. Segments with saved search text, custom fields, company filters, date filters, member status, subscriber status, or access rules stay available in Contacts, but cannot be used as a campaign audience yet.
- If you pick a segment with unsupported filters, Hiveality keeps the campaign audience unchanged and explains that the segment cannot be used for this send.
- If you update lists or tags from the built-in manager, the audience card refreshes in place so you can review the latest estimated recipients before sending.
- Estimated recipients only includes contacts who are currently eligible for that campaign type (for example, topic opt-outs and unsubscribed addresses are excluded).
- Recipient review searches handle names and emails with special characters more safely when you review or export campaign contacts.
- If the estimated recipient count is 0, the campaign cannot be sent.
- After you schedule a campaign, the send uses a saved audience snapshot for that run. Use Unschedule to Edit if you need to change targeting before it sends.
