AllCommunityCoursesCourse builder

Course builder

Build modules, lessons, course structure, and downloadable lesson resources.

Builder header actions

The Course Builder header shows:

  • Course Title input
  • Published or Draft badge
  • Unsaved changes indicator
  • Resources, Settings, Preview, Discard, Save Draft, Publish

If publishing fails, Course Builder shows the API error returned by the publish request so you can fix the blocking issue before trying again.

Preview your course

Select Preview to open the public course view in a new tab. If a lesson is selected, Preview opens that lesson. If the course has saved draft changes, the preview opens the draft version; otherwise it opens the editor preview version.

Course preview access is temporary and tied to the course you opened from the builder, so you can check unpublished learner-facing changes without publishing them first.

Build your course structure

1

Add a module

In Course Structure, select Add New Module .

2

Add lessons

Use the module menu to create lessons, then drag to reorder.

3

Edit content

Select a lesson to open the editor in the main panel.

4

Save your draft

Select Save Draft to keep work in progress.

The Course Structure panel remembers expanded modules and scroll position while you move between lessons. When you open a specific lesson, its module expands so the selected lesson stays easy to find in larger courses.

When drip content is enabled, module and lesson rows show visual drip or lock indicators. Hover the indicator to see whether a lesson unlocks after a delay, after a previous lesson, on a specific date, or only after manual release.

Settings modal tabs

Select Settings to open the Course Settings modal with:

  • General
  • Access
  • Learning
  • Drip Content
  • Appearance

Key settings include Course Visibility, Enable Discussions, Sequential Completion, Enable Drip Content, and the course's learner-facing color theme.

Course appearance

Open Settings and choose Appearance when a course should match a specific look in the learner player and builder preview.

  • Choose a preset such as Neutral, Cream, Slate, Ocean, or Ink.
  • Select Match my brand to use your website brand colors for course buttons, highlights, and progress while keeping text readable.
  • Select Custom colors to edit the accent, background, surface, text, and progress colors directly.
  • Use the preview in the Appearance tab to check the sidebar, active lesson, progress bar, and buttons before saving.

Completed lessons stay green in every appearance so learners can still spot their progress quickly.

Deep dives

Resources

Use Resources to open the course-wide assets panel and review files, links, audio, and video attached to lessons.

  • Search resources by title or lesson.
  • Open the source file or link when available.
  • Attach file, link, audio, or video resources to individual lessons so learners can find supporting materials next to the lesson content.
  • You can attach resources immediately after adding a new lesson. The builder saves the lesson in the background first, then attaches the resource to the saved lesson.
  • Resource cards show a loading placeholder while a file or link is being attached, so you can see that the add action is still in progress.
  • Delete resources that should no longer appear for learners.

Course resources are grouped by lesson so larger courses are easier to audit before publishing.

For large course migrations, approved API or assistant workflows can create the course, modules, lessons, and lesson resources together. Review the generated course tree and resource list in the builder before publishing.

If a large course build is interrupted, approved workflows can append the missing modules, lessons, and resources to the existing course instead of making a duplicate. Review the course tree after any resumed build.

If generated structure needs cleanup, confirm the scope first. A full course delete removes its modules, lessons, and resources. Deleting a module keeps its lessons in the course so you can move or clean them up separately.

Video thumbnails

When a video lesson has uploaded or external video media, use

Thumbnail in the lesson media area to choose the poster image learners see before playback.

  • Default uses the generated video thumbnail.
  • Timeline lets you choose a frame from an uploaded video.
  • Custom lets you select an uploaded image from File Manager.

Uploaded course videos can also use generated transcript text and chapters from

Videos when those assets are available.
